Over 15 years experience taking ideas off the back of a napkin to launching them globally. In 2003, I took a $20,000 loan turned it into a global business. The brand I built was called PetLoo & we manufactured and distributed a range of pet products globally. In 2013 the brand and company was acquired by PetSafe. Prior to founding a VC firm, Bondi Born – a luxury swimwear label, and being on the leadership team of FairFax, I started my career 25 years ago in global ad agencies where I ran the advertising for household brands like Coca-Cola, Weet-Bix, Pantene and IBM. I discovered I have a brain wired for strategic thinking and excelled at brand strategy. How do consumers think about brands? How do you differentiate a brand and develop a unique positioning with distinct values and personality so that consumers come to you, transact and stay loyal? In 1996 I set up one of the first dedicated Digital Marketing agencies, Expanded Media (XM), for Australia’s then largest ad agency, George Patterson Bates. I was responsible for growing revenue from zero to $3m within 12 months for blue-chip clients like Optus, Ninemsn, David Jones and St. George helping them create their very first websites and online advertising campaigns. I joined Fairfax in 1998 and in the subsequent twelve years, I sat on the Leadership Team reporting to the various CEOs and the business grew to having 450 staff and $110m EBITDA per annum. Some of my highlights of these 12 amazing years include: • I convinced Fairfax management and Board in 1999 to break up “Fairfax Classifieds Online” and launch their sections as separate brands online. Domain is now valued at $2b. Strategic decisions like these can seem small, but they can actually determine the future success or failure of your business if you don’t get them right in the beginning. • Named “Internet Pioneer of the Year” in 2000 for developing and writing Australia’s first University accredited course in Internet Advertising for UTS and in 2002 was named one of the Top 10 Most Influential people in e-Marketing. • In 2003 I established from start-up, Fairfax Enterprises, a print and digital direct-selling and book publishing business that bridges the newspapers and Fairfax Digital. It grew from nothing to 10 staff and $2m profit in 2 years and remains to this day a significant part of Fairfax’s revenue. • Not long after we acquired RSVP.com.au in 2006 I was put in to get it in shape for integration into Fairfax Digital. We took the brand mainstream and set up better digital marketing KPIs and staffing and within 6 months we’d halved the cost of customer acquisition, while accelerating member numbers and revenue growth. • In 2007 I set up an SEO/SEM taskforce and mentored a team of search experts to share knowledge and optimise Fairfax’s multi-million dollar spend in this area. In my last 3 years at Fairfax Digital I ran Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions - scouting for companies for Fairfax Digital to build, invest in or acquire, meeting with literally hundreds of entrepreneurs in a multitude of different sectors learning something from each one as to how they started and grew their businesses, understanding and assessing their businesses models and studying their future growth strategies. It resulted in a number of mergers, acquisitions and start-ups for Fairfax and was an exhilarating experience. I then set up Foundry, a boutique VC that invested in pre-revenue ecommerce start-ups. After looking at dozens of pitches including sitting on the selection committee for Innovation Bay, we did four investments (2 failed, 1 we sold and 1 is still growing nicely) before I realised I wasn’t having any fun sitting on the sidelines. I needed to be in the driver’s seat of my own business. This brings me to Bondi Born. Bondi Born is a luxury swimwear brand that I started with my business partner, Glenn Parks (highly experienced in global sourcing, production and logistics), in 2015. In our first full year of operation, targeting the European market, we turned over $500k+ and the brand was hung on the racks of prestige retailers like Selfridges and Harrods. We are now in premium Department Stores and boutiques from Munich, Mykonos and Milan to Croatia, Cayman Islands and Cote d’Azur. Right now we are selling our yet to be released 2018 collection to retailers in 5 continents through 14 contracted agents. We have a website in three currencies, third party logistic warehouses on 4 continents and we are targeting $4m in revenue for the coming 12 months. The countless lessons I learned and training I received in my 20 years in corporate life have helped me to do this. I’m building a brand based on a distinct market position, we are using social media and sophisticated digital marketing techniques, I raised capital to accelerate our growth, I surrounded myself with experts in areas I had no knowledge of and have listened and learned from them.
