In 1996 I set up one of the first dedicated Digital Marketing agencies, Expanded Media (XM), for Australia’s then largest ad agency, George Patterson Bates. I was responsible for growing revenue from zero to $3m within 12 months for blue-chip clients like Optus, Ninemsn, David Jones and St. George helping them create their very first websites and online advertising campaigns. I joined Fairfax in 1998 and in the subsequent twelve years, I sat on the Leadership Team reporting to the various CEOs and the business grew to having 450 staff and $110m EBITDA per annum. We took the brand mainstream and set up better digital marketing KPIs and staffing and within 6 months we’d halved the cost of customer acquisition, while accelerating member numbers and revenue growth. • In 2007 I set up an SEO/SEM taskforce and mentored a team of search experts to share knowledge and optimise Fairfax’s multi-million dollar spend in this area.
