Avi and I started Top Expert to help entrepreneurs make smarter decisions about their business. God knows we could have used it ourselves last year (but more on that later)!
In a nutshell, we want to create a platform where both budding and established entrepreneurs can get informal over-the-phone advice, from people who have been there and done it before. We want to be the place they turn to whenever stuck or needing a second opinion on how to move forward – kind of like a virtual coffee catch up.
And we know first-hand this kind of thing is needed. You see, in 2016 we had a massive #epicfail start-up.
Very green and naively enthusiastic, we spent a ton of cash and time building a marketplace that we swore was going to be the next big thing. We broke every rule in the book and, after finally speaking to a start-up expert who asked all the right questions, we decided to shut the whole thing down just a week after launch. We had made so many mistakes in the planning and setting up, that it was going to be almost impossible to get back on track!
We didn’t have to sift through the rubble to uncover the lesson we needed to learn. It was staring us smack bang in the face – we really should have spoken to more experts before diving in head first. Yes – Avi is a serial business owner and has started, built and sold four different businesses. But, like many other small business owners across Australia, he doesn't have a network of specialists he can call on when he needs advice. He often makes decisions based on trial and error and gut.
So, we decided to start Top Expert as a way for small business owners and entrepreneurs (like us) to access great expert advice whenever they need it. You can read more about the trials and tribulations of setting up Top Expert here.
We’ve only just started, but already Top Expert has helped loads of entrepreneurs make better decisions. Even our incredible experts have said they wish this service was available when they first started their businesses!
Top Expert is still in its infancy, though, so if you have any advice on how we can improve, we'd love to hear from you! Just email [email protected]
